Etherium is a fascinating real-time strategy game that – like any other strategy game – demands not only tactical mastery, but also the ability to effectively command an army to victory. If you fail to meet these criteria then maybe this isn’t the game for you, because Etherium‘s alien aesthetic and fast-paced action can be a little overwhelming for those of you who are new to the genre. Don’t get me wrong however; Tindalos Interactive has created an enchanting game, where excitement greets you around every corner. If you want to survive the war, then I recommend you pay attention solider, because there is a lot to learn.
Etherium takes place in a science-fiction universe, wherein three separate Empires are engaged in a war over the magical – yet somewhat mysterious – mineral Etherium. Each Empire manipulates the Etherium differently. For example, the Vectide Empire uses the mineral to help sustain a life form in an exoskeleton, which in turn, makes their race more powerful; unfortunately their dependence on Etherium has created a cycle of war in which they must fight to survive. The game itself follows the generic RTS formula, use the classic macro-management system to create your army, manage your resources, and then develop a base, before going out and annihilating the enemy. Etherium has also incorporated a secondary mode, and if you’re playing a ‘Conquest’ then your game won’t be limited to only RTS. Between battles, your empire (and the two others) will each take turns to move around the galaxy. You can repair your mothership, or use political cards to hinder the activities of another faction. You can also attack other ships, or launch an assault on their territory. By adding this mode, Tindalos Interactive haven’t simply created another real-time strategy game to be thrown onto the pile, but they’ve created something a little bit bigger. By allowing the battle to extend into the galaxy, it creates a non-linear storyline in which every move you make affects the standing of your Empire. There really are endless hours of fun to be had here.
